It is a common fact of modern life that at some stage a large proportion of the worlds population will suffer from depression and anxiety. There should not be stigma attached to suffering from these ailments as they are so widespread, although those who have not suffered from them find it difficult to empathize with those who are trying to deal with these problems.

There are many symptoms that are associated with depression so someone who thinks they might be suffering should seek help from an expert for an early diagnosis. Symptoms include weight loss or gain, an inability to sleep or difficulty in waking up, apathy and a lack of interest in surrounding and people, and an inability to concentrate and a lack of energy.

Anxiety can manifest itself in panic attacks, which when they happen for the first time can be very frightening as they can produce a feeling of faintness and a racing heart, but are not damaging in the long term.

The symptoms of anxiety and depression may not be immediately obvious and it is all too easy to blame them on someone just being moody or angry which might make it difficult for the person to get the treatment that they need. Someone with these symptoms should be urged to seek medical help as a trained professional will easily be able to diagnose it correctly.

Anxiety and depression are both illnesses that have every chance of being fully cured with the right treatment. Once diagnosed then the medical practitioner can work out a treatment plan with the patient so that they are fully aware of how the treatment will progress.

Treatment may consist of both drugs and therapy. While the drugs will start to relieve the symptoms of depression and make life feel more bearable for the patient, the therapy will look at the reason for the depression and will teach the patient how to deal with this so that they recover hopefully for good.

If one method of therapy does not seem to be effective then perhaps the physician will try another method. This treatment alongside the drugs will be effective but some patience may be needed.

It is important to keep remembering that there is no quick fix to depression and anxiety, and that although the drugs can mask the symptoms they probably cannot cure it all on their own. The therapy is necessary so that it is dealt with as completely as possible ensuring that the patient is fully returned to health and hopefully will not have another episode of depression. If it does reoccur then there is a better chance that they will recognize the symptoms and adjust the way they are feeling from the previous time so that medical treatment can be sought much earlier and the length of the depression will be less.
